Well this was the classic game of two halves and certainly one of the most amazing ones I have been involved in, with just 12 players early Saturday morning we thought we would be in for a very tough game at Bassett, on a pitch that has possibly the best surface in the league to play on. We did end up with a full bench and Mitch making him self available at the last minute and then declaring himself " sort of fit" after the warm up away we went.
We started the game quite well, once again playing our now seemed to be favoured formation of 4 3 3 Adam Cass whipped in a free kick for the ball to come back out and Mitch to plant it into the roof of the net, one up that's not like us, thought it was too good to be true, a ball was floated into the area and nobody took responsibility to clear it unfortunately it fell to one of the Bassett players who scored, it got worse and with some sloppy play across the middle of the park, Bassett seized on their chance to score a second, we were still creating chances and playing well, but at half time we were losing 2-1
At half time all the players believed that we were the better team and that it wouldn't be long before we scored, it certainly was not, as two mins after the start of the second half Aaron Masson drove between two Bassett defenders to slot the ball home after a great through ball from Corey, we were well fired up now and buzzing everybody " wanted" it, we were pressing them very high up the pitch, after a great run from Brighty who was taken down in the penalty area, Mitch calmly steeped to score from the spot, 3 2 up with in 5 mins of the restart. The pressure we applied was amazing, we were rewarded with 4 more goals to make it a 7 2 win, in amongst the goals there was prob one of the best goals I have seen for a long long time, the ball was played out of defence up the left wing, Brighty
" toyed" with the full back before whipping in a across to Aaron who calmly cushion headed the ball down to Mitch who nearly took the back of the net out to complete his hat trick, Brighty and Aaron scored two each in the second half.
It would not do the team justice if I singled out certain players for praise as he whole team from Mark through to the 3 up top competed and played some at time breathing taking football, I would say that Brighty worked hard all afternoon as was completely shattered at the final whistle, the mid field was marshalled well by Emilio with Cass and Corey playing their rolls putting in some great tackles and then getting the ball forward, at the back Aaron Gilbert and Zac were solid all afternoon, and full backs Chris and Glen dealt with everything Bassett had to offer, Mark once again stood solid in goal.
To say it was a complete and hard working team performance in the second half was an understatement, the subs did well when they got on ,but it was difficult to bring any of the players off as they were playing so well, it was just a great game to be involved in, you have got to be very proud of your second half performance and attitude lads....
