Disappointing result if not one the performance deserved, took game to Backwell from the start but came up against a very strong and determined defensive set up that restricted us to half chances only, though Josh Bright, Rhys Lock and Dan Heavey all went close in the first 20 minutes then Bright was only inches away from connecting with a free kick from the outstanding Zach Costello. Not to say it was all one way and goalkeeper Mark Billingsley was kept on his toes by a couple of close range efforts just before halftime.
2nd 45 was a little more evenly contested with Backwell raising the tempo and going close on 55 minutes when their centre forward thumped a 20 yard shot against the crossbar and the same player finally broke the deadlock with a far post header that looped over everyone and somehow found the far corner of the net, undeterred we kept at it and after a couple of forced changes we piled forwards but if honest without ever really having the nous to breakdown the strong defence though again Bright and Jaiden Savery went very close with half chances.
On another day the points shared would probably have been a fairer outcome but it was not to be and well done to Backwell and the 3 officials who got through it with minimum fuss.
No game next week so all roads will lead to Pewsey to watch the reserves and catch up with a few old friends up at the Vale.
