Corsham Town FC secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Hereford Pegasus in a thrilling Hellenic League encounter.
On our first away day in Hereford Corsham was expecting their toughest test of the season so far with a game against a Pegasus team that had set the early pace at the top of the table and were now sitting pretty in 3rd place.
The Quarrymen started well but as the game settled down the home side began to dominate, pressing high and creating chances. Corsham struggled to find the space to play their expansive football and when they did break through the press the Pegasus defence was coping well and restricting them to speculative shots.
However, Corsham won a penalty against the run of play after some great work from Isaiah ‘The Prophet’ Crawford, turning his marker in the box and being unceremoniously dragged down onto the plastic. This sparked some unsavoury complaining from the Pegasus defenders and the keeper was booked for ungentlemanly conduct trying to intimidate Dylan Lewis as he tried to place the ball on the spot. Finally, the penalty was taken and the ‘dark arts’ employed by the Hereford side paid off as the keeper saved to his right.
Corsham where still struggling to get a grip on the game and spurred on by the penalty save Hereford took the lead when a long throw was headed home. Corsham responded with a flurry of chances before halftime, with Crawford twice denied by the Pegasus goalkeeper.
The second half saw a significant improvement from the visitors, the home side’s press had run out of steam and Corsham started to dominate possession and created numerous opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 68th minute when Crawford finished off a well-worked move to level the score with a dink over the advancing keeper. Just a few minutes later, a superb cross from Joe Davis was headed home by Javi Blasquez to give Corsham a deserved lead.
Hereford pushed hard for an equalizer in the final stages, throwing caution to the wind and creating several dangerous moments. However, Corsham’s defence held firm, with some great defending by Andre Freckleton who dealt well with probably Pegasus’ most dangerous player. This result extends our winning streak in the league to eight games and keeps us firmly in the promotion race.
The match was a testament to Corsham’s resilience and determination. Despite falling behind early, they never gave up and continued to press forward. Their second-half performance was exceptional, with their passing, movement, and finishing on display.
