Those summer Nights! (Tell me more, tell me more, more, more) Corsham Town 7 Royal Wootton Bassett 1 The Taxtful Southbank was buzzing with anticipation for the visit of an inform Royal Wootton Basset team in what promised to be a closely fought battle under some spectacular September sun! A high pace was set by both sides and Corsham flew at the Bassett defence and went 1-0 up after 3 minutes from a Mark Cooper cushioned header back for Kane Simpson to fire home, what a start to the match. This didn’t deter Bassett as they flew down the other end from the restart and from a good position their player headed over the bar. The pace of the game was certainly living up to its billing. On 10 minutes Corsham doubled their lead, leading scorer Dan Price with another towering header from a Rusby throw. Corsham were steaming into the away defence now at every chance they got and both teams kept a very high pace. Shortly afterwards another red card at the Southbank (think that’s 5 so far this season) saw the Bassett number 11 off after a shocking tackle on Greenwood as he flew forward down the left. Floodgates were starting to open now, and Kane got his second of the game with a superb solo effort, finishing sublimely past the advancing keeper. One change at halftime saw Harrison Lea come off and be replaced by Henry Sady, which had little effect on the Corsham performance as they steamrolled on with Kane completing his hattrick after intercepting a loose pass from a Bassett defender on 60 minutes. Wootton Bassett got a consolation goal as out of the blue, a lack of concentration allowed them a decent effort that went into the bottom corner of the Reds net. It was now time to rest a few more players as Hobbs, Smith and Greenwood were retired for Walker, Bath and new signing Sol Price. The Rusby/Price combination was at it again on 80 minutes as the Rock powered home another header from a throw and Kane went close to his fourth of the game after some superb work from Archie Milne and Henry Sady down the right-hand side, both showing maturity beyond their years. Ryan Bath had been on the pitch for a full 15 minutes before he scored his obligatory goal off the bench, and what a finish it was, a worldie from just inside the right-hand corner of the box into the top left-hand corner of the Bassett net. Alfie Kesley was needed on 88 minutes to superbly push away a great effort for the Basset number 7, but shortly afterwards Corsham countered and Henry got in on the act to make it 7-1. What an incredible night at the Taxtful Southbank that will go down in the history books as one of the biggest winning margins in recent history. Man of the Match: Kane Simpson
