A freezing Taxtful Southbank witnessed a fiery performance from Corsham Town as they comfortably dispatched their opponents 5-1 to book their place in the next round of the Challenge Cup. Kye Simpson stole the show with a brace, while Matt Jones, Conner McKay, and Dan Price (from the penalty spot) each contributed a goal to the Quarrymen’s dominant display.
Corsham began like a team with fire in their bellies, despite the icy conditions. Nathan Davis threaded a brilliant pass through the heart of the defence, finding Simpson who coolly slotted home to open the scoring within five minutes. Ten minutes later, Jones doubled the lead after reacting quickest to Rich Dawley’s thunderous effort that rattled the crossbar.
The match was still under 30 minutes when Simpson then grabbed his second, brilliantly laying the ball into the path of Gilbert whose shot was parried, but the Corsham number nine followed up to finish ruthlessly.
Conner McKay added a third on the hour mark, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error to put the game firmly out of reach.
Shortly afterwards a bizarre chain of events saw the referee award a penalty for a push on Dan Price in the box. The centre-back stepped up himself and hammed the ball in from the spot but turned from hero to villain minutes later by conceding a penalty to the visitors at the other end and they scored a consolation goal.
Leon Greenland made way for Alex Hallett in the 80th minute as Corsham saw out the final stages comfortably. The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations from the few fans who braved the cold, marking a resounding victory and a safe passage into the next round of the Challenge Cup.
Tytherington Rocks deserve credit for their fighting spirit, but ultimately, Corsham was simply too hot to handle on this cold evening.
